How to Set Up WireGuard VPN on ASUS Routers with VPNUK

Setting up WireGuard® VPNUK on ASUS Routers

This guide will help you set up WireGuard VPN on an ASUS router using the VPNUK service. This ensures secure, encrypted VPN access for all devices on your network.

Note: WireGuard is only supported on ASUS routers running ASUSWRT-Merlin firmware. If your router uses stock ASUSWRT, consider flashing Merlin firmware for full VPN support.

WireGuard® configuration download

Please login using the VPN login username and password from the vpn account you would like to configure.

IMPORTANT NOTES: A WireGuard® connection is currently only compatible with our Dedicated IP accounts. Each configuration file is generated automatically, twice per hour, the process can take up to 20 minutes to complete, it can therefore sometimes take up to 1 hour for a new configuration file to be created on new accounts. If you are a new user please allow the system time to generate your configuration file.

1: Check Router Compatibility

Before proceeding, confirm that your ASUS router supports WireGuard. The following routers with ASUSWRT-Merlin firmware support WireGuard natively: GT-AX6000, RT-AX86U, RT-AX88U, RT-AX86S, RT-AX58U, RT-AC86U, RT-AC88U

  1. Log in to your ASUS router:
  2. Navigate to VPN > VPN Fusion or VPN Client
  3. If WireGuard is listed as an option, your router supports it

If WireGuard is not available, install ASUSWRT-Merlin by following the instructions here: https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/

2. Download Your VPNUK WireGuard Configuration File

  1. Click here to download the WireGuard configuration file from our server.
  2. Log in with your VPNUK VPN account login usernamd and password.
  3. The system will fetch your WireGuard configuration file from the VPNUK server.
  4. Save it to your computer.

3. Configure WireGuard on Your ASUS Router

  1. Log in to your ASUS router admin panel
    • Go to VPN > VPN Client
  2. Click Add Profile
  3. Select WireGuard
  4. Click Import Configuration
  5. Upload the vpnuk-wg.conf file you downloaded earlier
  6. Click Apply

4. Connect to VPNUK via WireGuard

  1. In the VPN Client section, find your VPNUK WireGuard profile
  2. Click Activate to connect
  3. Once connected, WireGuard will show your Public IP, VPN endpoint, and handshake status.To confirm the connection, check your new IP address by visiting: https://www.ipaddress.com/
    Your IP should now match your unique VPNUK IP.

Optional Settings

1. Enable Auto-Start for WireGuard VPN

To ensure WireGuard VPN starts automatically on your ASUS router:

  1. Go to VPN Client
  2. Find your VPNUK WireGuard connection
  3. Enable Auto-Start on Boot

2. Configure VPN Routing

By default, all devices use the VPN by default. You can configure selective routing so that only the devices you choose, route through the VPNUK connection:

  1. Go to VPN Client > Routing Policy
  2. Select “VPN for selected clients”
  3. Add specific devices to use the VPN

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Cannot connect to VPNUK servers?

  1. Ensure your WireGuard configuration file is correct and up to date, we would always recommend fetching a new configuration file from our server if you are unable to connect. Click here to download a new configuration file.
  2. Try restarting your router and modem (if applies)
  3. Check if your ISP is blocking VPN connections

VPN is connected, but no internet?

  1. Open WireGuard and go to your tunnel settings.
  2. Ensure AllowedIPs = 0.0.0.0/0, ::/0 is set correctly.
  3. Try disabling IPv6 in your router settings
