How to Set Up L2TP/IPSec on GL.iNet Routers with VPNUK

Setting up an L2TP/IPSec connection on a GL.iNET router

This guide will walk you through installing and configuring L2TP/IPSec on GL.iNet routers using VPNUK. L2TP/IPSec is a secure and widely compatible VPN protocol, making it a great alternative for users who prefer a stable, encrypted VPN connection without additional software.

1. Access Your GL.iNet Router Admin Panel

  1. Connect your computer or mobile device to your GL.iNet router via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  2. Open a web browser and go to: http://192.168.8.1 (Default GL.iNet Admin Panel)
  3. Log in using your router credentials (default username: admin).

2. Get Your VPNUK Login Credentials

  1. Log in to your VPNUK user account (with your user account credentials) at: https://www.vpnuk.net/my-account/
  2. Navigate to VPN Account Details.
  3. Copy the following details:
    • VPN Username
    • VPN Password
    • VPN Server IP (Dedicated IP Accounts)

3. Get your Shared Server Address

If your account is a Shared IP Account or if you would like to connect to a Shared IP server:

  1. Log in to your VPNUK user account (with your user account credentials) at: https://www.vpnuk.net/my-account/
  2. Navigate to Shared IP Serverlist.
  3. Copy the following details:
    • Server IP

3. Configure L2TP/IPSec on Your GL.iNet Router

  • In the GL.iNet Admin Panel, go to VPN > L2TP/IPSec.
  • Click Add a New VPN Configuration.
  • Enter the following settings:
    • VPN Type: L2TP/IPSec
    • Server Address: Your VPNUK Server IP address
    • Username: Your VPN Username
    • Password: Your VPN Password
    • Pre-Shared Key (PSK): 69000903
  • Click Apply to save the settings.

5. Connect to VPNUK VPN Using L2TP/IPSec

  1. In the L2TP/IPSec Client section, locate the VPNUK profile.
  2. Click Connect.
  3. Once connected, you should see:
    • Active VPN Status
    • VPN IP Address Assigned
    • Connection Duration & Data Usage

To verify your VPNUK connection is working, check your VPNUK IP address at: https://www.ipaddress.com/

6. Enable Auto-Start for L2TP/IPSec VPN (Recommended)

To automatically connect to VPNUK on router startup:

  1. Go to VPN > L2TP/IPSec Client.
  2. Select your VPNUK connection.
  3. Enable “Auto Start”.
  4. Click Save.

Now, your GL.iNet router will automatically connect to VPNUK L2TP/IPSec whenever it starts up.

7. Configure VPN Routing (Optional – Use VPN on Specific Devices Only)

By default, all devices connected to your router use the VPN. You can manually select which devices use the VPN and which bypass it.

  1. Go to VPN > VPN Policy.
  2. Enable “Policy Based Routing”.
  3. Choose one of the following:
    • VPN for all devices – Uses the VPN for everything.
    • VPN for selected devices only – Allows only chosen devices to use the VPN.
    • Bypass VPN for selected devices – Allows only selected devices to bypass the VPN.
  4. Click Apply to save your settings.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Cannot connect to VPNUK servers?
Ensure your L2TP/IPSec server address and credentials are correct.
Ensure the Pre Shared Key (PSK) is entered as: 69000903
Try restarting your router and modem.
Check if your ISP is blocking VPN connections.

VPN is connected, but no internet?
Go to L2TP/IPSec settings and check that Redirect Gateway is enabled.
