Setting up an OpenVPN connection on a TP-Link Router
This guide will walk you through configuring an OpenVPN connection on a TP-Link router using VPNUK’s secure VPN service. Unlike other setups that require separate .crt, .key, and .ovpn files, VPNUK provides a single .ovpn
configuration file, making setup faster and easier.
1. Download Your VPNUK OpenVPN Configuration File
- Click Here to open our OpenVPN configuration file downloader.
- Log in with your VPNUK account credentials.
- Download an OpenVPN TCP or UDP configuration file (
.ovpn
) - Save the configuration file to your computer.
2. Enable OpenVPN on TP-Link Router
- Log in to your TP-Link router via the web interface (
http://tplinkwifi.net
or your router’s IP address). - Navigate to Advanced > VPN.
- Select OpenVPN and click Enable.
3. Import the VPNUK OpenVPN Configuration File
- Click Import Configuration File.
- Select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier.
- Click Upload to apply the settings.
4. Configure OpenVPN Client Settings
- Ensure the following settings are correct:
- VPN Type:
OpenVPN Client
- VPN Server Address: (From your
.ovpn
file) - Username: (Enter your VPNUK username)
- Password: (Enter your VPNUK password)
- Encryption:
AES-256-CBC
- Authentication:
SHA1
- Protocol:
TCP (or UDP)
- Port:
443 for TCP or 1194 for UDP
- VPN Type:
- Click Save & Apply.
5. Configure Firewall & Routing for OpenVPN
- Navigate to Advanced > Firewall.
- Ensure VPN Passthrough is enabled.
- Navigate to Advanced > Routing.
- Add a new route:
- Destination Address:
0.0.0.0/0
- Gateway:
OpenVPN Interface
- Destination Address:
- Click Save & Apply.
6. Connect & Verify VPN Status
- Go to VPN > OpenVPN.
- Click Connect to establish a VPN connection.
- Check the VPN Status tab to confirm the connection is active.
