Setting up an OpenVPN connection on a TP-Link Router

This guide will walk you through configuring an OpenVPN connection on a TP-Link router using VPNUK’s secure VPN service. Unlike other setups that require separate .crt, .key, and .ovpn files, VPNUK provides a single .ovpn configuration file, making setup faster and easier.

1. Download Your VPNUK OpenVPN Configuration File

  1. Click Here to open our OpenVPN configuration file downloader.
  2. Log in with your VPNUK account credentials.
  3. Download an OpenVPN TCP or UDP configuration file (.ovpn)
  4. Save the configuration file to your computer.

2. Enable OpenVPN on TP-Link Router

  1. Log in to your TP-Link router via the web interface (http://tplinkwifi.net or your router’s IP address).
  2. Navigate to Advanced > VPN.
  3. Select OpenVPN and click Enable.

3. Import the VPNUK OpenVPN Configuration File

  1. Click Import Configuration File.
  2. Select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier.
  3. Click Upload to apply the settings.

4. Configure OpenVPN Client Settings

  1. Ensure the following settings are correct:
    • VPN Type: OpenVPN Client
    • VPN Server Address: (From your .ovpn file)
    • Username: (Enter your VPNUK username)
    • Password: (Enter your VPNUK password)
    • Encryption: AES-256-CBC
    • Authentication: SHA1
    • Protocol: TCP (or UDP)
    • Port: 443 for TCP or 1194 for UDP
  2. Click Save & Apply.

5. Configure Firewall & Routing for OpenVPN

  1. Navigate to Advanced > Firewall.
  2. Ensure VPN Passthrough is enabled.
  3. Navigate to Advanced > Routing.
  4. Add a new route:
    • Destination Address: 0.0.0.0/0
    • Gateway: OpenVPN Interface
  5. Click Save & Apply.

6. Connect & Verify VPN Status

  1. Go to VPN > OpenVPN.
  2. Click Connect to establish a VPN connection.
  3. Check the VPN Status tab to confirm the connection is active.
