How Can We Help?
Connection Types
All VPNUK servers have been configured to be compatible with the following VPN connection types.
OpenVPN
IKEv2
L2TP with IPSEC
PPTP
These are the benefits of each of the VPNUK connection types.
Benefits of an OpenVPN Connection?
We always recommend OpenVPN as the default connection type on most devices and systems. OpenVPN uses a highly customisable protocol to achieve very secure connectivity, using SSL. VPNUK offer OpenVPN as the preferred VPN protocol, and the reasons for this are plentiful.
Security
We have configured OpenVPN to use 256-bit encryption keys and high-end ciphers. This gives optimal protection against the man in the middle attacks. As a result, it is very difficult to grab the information by altering the data packet.
Compatibility
OpenVPN can run on a large number of devices and system. Be it Android, iOS, Mac OSX, Linux or Windows, they are all compatible with an OpenVPN connection..
Firewall Passthrough
We have configured OpenVPN to use multiple ports through TCP and UDP, which enables it to work with most internet service providers without any problems. Even when there are network firewall based blocks in place, it is difficult to block the OpenVPN connections. For example, our OpenVPN configuration has been enabled with TCP port 443, which means the connection will appear as typical HTTPS connection and can easily pass through most firewalls.
Benefits of an IKEv2 Connection?
IKEv2 has grown into a very popular connection type over the past few years, mainly because its easy to see setup and highly secure. IKEv2 provides a request and response VPN connection ensuring a secure traffic. Cisco and Microsoft developed the IKEv2 protocol. It’s secure, stable and easy to setup. It is also one of the quickest VPN protocols.
Speed
IKEv2 offers faster speeds when compared to L2TP and PPTP.
Security
IKEv2 offers certificate based authentication, its very secure.
Benefits of L2TP with IPSEC?
IPSec (Internet Protocol Security) is a security protocol that provides encryption and authentication over the Internet. IPSec supports network-level data integrity, data confidentiality, data origin authentication, and replay protection. IPSec is integrated at the Internet layer (layer 3), it provides security for almost all protocols in the TCP/IP suite, and because IPSec is applied transparently to applications, there is no need to configure separate security for each application that uses TCP/IP.
Compatibility
The L2TP protocol is widely supported by all operating systems.
Stability
The L2TP protocol is known for being reliable and stable.
Security
The L2TP protocol is extremely secure because it doesn’t have any major vulnerabilities.
Benefits of a PPTP Connection?
PPTP is one of the oldest vpn connections types available, it has been discontinued on a number of Operating Systems and devices. Even though PPTP offers less security than all of the other connection types, many of our users still prefer to use a PPTP connection due to the benefits of very low overheads and its connection stability.
Ease of use
PPTP is very easy to setup
Speed
PPTP has very low overheads so can offer greater speeds when compared to L2TP
Stability
PPTP is very stable
