Setting up an OpenVPN connection on a GL.iNET router
This guide will walk you through installing and configuring OpenVPN on GL.iNet routers using VPNUK. GL.iNet routers come with built-in OpenVPN support, making setup quick and easy for a secure and private VPN connection.
1. Start Configuration
Click Here to login and configure the OpenVPN connection. Our system will automatically generate your Open-WRT configuration file and can email the file to you, you also have the option to download the configuration manually.
2. Choose a Server
If your account is on the Shared IP platform, you are welcome to choose any or as many servers as you like. If you have a Dedicated IP account your server details will be automatically selected for you.
3. Get the config files
Click onto the download option, you have the option to download the files as UDP or TCP. If you prefer to have the files sent to your inbox, confirm your email address then click onto the ‘Continue’ button, this will instruct our server to email your config file to you. The email will arrive after a couple of minutes.
4. Access Your GL.iNet Router Admin Panel
- Connect your computer or mobile device to your GL.iNet router via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Open a web browser and go to: http://192.168.8.1 (Default GL.iNet Admin Panel)
- Log in using your router credentials (default username:
admin
).
5. Import the VPNUK OpenVPN Configuration File into Your GL.iNet Router
- In the GL.iNet Admin Panel, go to VPN > OpenVPN Client.
- Click Add a New Configuration.
- Select Import Configuration File.
- Upload the VPNUK OpenVPN
.ovpn
file you downloaded earlier. - Click Apply to save the settings.
6. Connect to VPNUK VPN Using OpenVPN
- In the OpenVPN Client section, locate the VPNUK profile.
- Click Connect.
- Once connected, you should see:
- Active VPN Status
- VPNUK IP Address Assigned
- Connection Duration & Data Usage
To verify your VPNUK connection is working, check your VPNUK IP address at: https://www.ipaddress.com/
7. Enable Auto-Start for OpenVPN VPN
To automatically connect to VPNUK on router startup:
- Go to VPN > OpenVPN Client.
- Select your VPNUK connection.
- Enable “Auto Start”.
- Click Save.
Now, your GL.iNet router will automatically connect to VPNUK OpenVPN whenever it starts up.
8. Configure VPN Routing (Optional – Use VPN on Specific Devices Only)
By default, all devices connected to your router use the VPN. You can manually select which devices use the VPN and which bypass it.
- Go to VPN > VPN Policy.
- Enable “Policy Based Routing”.
- Choose one of the following:
- VPN for all devices – Uses the VPN for everything.
- VPN for selected devices only – Allows only chosen devices to use the VPN.
- Bypass VPN for selected devices – Allows only selected devices to bypass the VPN.
- Click Apply to save your settings.

Troubleshooting Common Issues
Cannot connect to VPNUK servers?
Ensure your OpenVPN configuration file is correct, you can also tryt switching from TCP to UDP or vice versa.
Try restarting your router and modem.
Check if your ISP is blocking VPN connections.
VPN is connected, but no internet?
Go to OpenVPN settings and check Redirect Gateway
is enabled.
Try disabling IPv6 in your router settings.
