Setting up an PPTP connection on a GL.iNET router
This guide will walk you through installing and configuring PPTP on GL.iNet routers using VPNUK. PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) is one of the easiest VPN protocols to set up, providing fast speeds but with weaker security compared to modern VPN protocols. While PPTP is not recommended for sensitive data, it can still be useful for legacy devices and networks that require it.
1. Access Your GL.iNet Router Admin Panel
- Connect your computer or mobile device to your GL.iNet router via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Open a web browser and go to: http://192.168.8.1 (Default GL.iNet Admin Panel)
- Log in using your router credentials (default username:
admin
).
2. Get Your VPNUK Login Credentials
- Log in to your VPNUK user account (with your user account credentials) at: https://www.vpnuk.net/my-account/
- Navigate to VPN Account Details.
- Copy the following details:
- VPN Username
- VPN Password
- VPN Server IP (Dedicated IP Accounts)
3. Get your Shared Server Address
If your account is a Shared IP Account or if you would like to connect to a Shared IP server:
- Log in to your VPNUK user account (with your user account credentials) at: https://www.vpnuk.net/my-account/
- Navigate to Shared IP Serverlist.
- Copy the following details:
- Server IP
3. Configure PPTP on Your GL.iNet Router
- In the GL.iNet Admin Panel, go to VPN > PPTP Client.
- Click Add a New VPN Configuration.
- Enter the following settings:
- VPN Type: PPTP
- Server Address: Your VPNUK Server IP address
- Username: Your VPN Username
- Password: Your VPN Password
- MTU:
1450
(Default)
- Click Apply to save the settings.
5. Connect to VPNUK VPN Using PPTP
- In the PPTP Client section, locate the VPNUK profile.
- Click Connect.
- Once connected, you should see:
- Active VPN Status
- VPN IP Address Assigned
- Connection Duration & Data Usage
To verify your VPNUK connection is working, check your VPNUK IP address at: https://www.ipaddress.com/
6. Enable Auto-Start for PPTP VPN (Recommended)
To automatically connect to VPNUK on router startup:
- Go to VPN > PPTP Client.
- Select your VPNUK connection.
- Enable “Auto Start”.
- Click Save.
Now, your GL.iNet router will automatically connect to VPNUK PPTP whenever it starts up.
7. Configure VPN Routing (Optional – Use VPN on Specific Devices Only)
By default, all devices connected to your router use the VPN. You can manually select which devices use the VPN and which bypass it.
- Go to VPN > VPN Policy.
- Enable “Policy Based Routing”.
- Choose one of the following:
- VPN for all devices – Uses the VPN for everything.
- VPN for selected devices only – Allows only chosen devices to use the VPN.
- Bypass VPN for selected devices – Allows only selected devices to bypass the VPN.
- Click Apply to save your settings.

Troubleshooting Common Issues
Cannot connect to VPNUK servers?
Ensure your PPTP server address and credentials are correct.
Try restarting your router and modem.
Check if your ISP is blocking VPN connections.
VPN is connected, but no internet?
Go to L2TP/IPSec settings and check that Redirect Gateway
is enabled.
Try disabling IPv6 in your router settings.
Security Note:
PPTP is considered less secure than modern VPN protocols like WireGuard, OpenVPN, or L2TP/IPSec. If security is a priority, consider switching to a more secure VPN protocol.
