How to Set Up L2TP/IPSec VPN on Windows 10 with VPNUK

This guide will walk you through manually setting up an L2TP/IPSec VPN connection on Windows 10 using VPNUK’s secure VPN service. While L2TP/IPSec provides good security and compatibility, it may not always be the most stable option on Windows 10. If you experience connection issues, we recommend trying WireGuard, OpenVPN, or IKEv2 for improved performance.

1. Open Windows VPN Settings

  1. Press Win + I to open Windows Settings.
  2. Navigate to Network & Internet > VPN.
  3. Click Add VPN.

2. Configure the L2TP/IPSec VPN Connection

  1. VPN Provider: Windows (built-in)
  2. Connection Name: VPNUK L2TP
  3. Server Name or Address: (Enter your VPNUK server from your Members Area or Welcome to VPNUK email)
  4. VPN Type: L2TP/IPSec with pre-shared key
  5. Pre-Shared Key: 69000903
  6. Type of Sign-in Info: Username and password
  7. Enter your VPN username and password.
  8. Click Save.

3. Modify VPN Connection Properties

  1. Click on the VPNUK L2TP VPN connection, then click Advanced options.
  2. Scroll down and click Edit adapter options.
  3. Right-click on the VPNUK L2TP connection, then select Properties.

4. Adjust Security Settings

  1. Click on the Security tab.
  2. Type of VPN: Select L2TP/IPsec VPN from the dropdown menu.
  3. Click on Advanced Settings and:
    • Check Use pre-shared key for authentication.
    • Enter: 69000903 (VPNUK’s pre-shared key).
  4. Authentication:
    • Select “Allow these protocols”.
    • Check “Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP)”.
    • Check “Microsoft CHAP Version 2 (MS-CHAP v2)”.

5. Disable IPv6 (Recommended for Stability)

  1. Click on the Networking tab.
  2. Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).
  3. Click OK to save changes.

6. Connect to VPNUK Using L2TP/IPSec

  1. Click on the networking icon in the system tray.
  2. Select VPNUK L2TP VPN.
  3. Click Connect.
  4. Enter your VPNUK username and password, then click OK.

Your Windows 11 computer is now connected to VPNUK using L2TP/IPSec!

Troubleshooting Common Issues

VPN Not Connecting?
Ensure the L2TP/IPSec pre-shared key is correct, its 69000903
Check your VPNUK server address (found in your VPNUK Members area or Welcome to VPNUK email).
Restart your PC and try reconnecting.
Disable IPv6 in the network adapter settings.

Error 809 (L2TP/IPSec Blocked)?
Open Command Prompt (As Admin) and enter:

REG ADD HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesPolicyAgent /v AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule /t REG_DWORD /d 2 /f

Then restart your PC and try again.

Slow VPN Speeds?
Try a different VPNUK server.
Restart your router and PC.
