What Is Reverse DNS (rDNS)?
Forward DNS vs Reverse DNS
Forward DNS resolves a domain name to an IP address (e.g. vpnuk.net → 194.x.x.x). Reverse DNS (rDNS) does the opposite — it resolves an IP address back to a hostname. This is also called a PTR record.
Why rDNS Matters
rDNS is used by email servers to validate the sender's IP, by spam filters to assess IP reputation, and by many services to identify whether an IP is residential, commercial or a VPN/datacentre range.
Custom rDNS on VPNUK
If you have a 1:1 Dedicated IP account, or a Dedicated IP on servers UK14–UK22, VPNUK can set a custom PTR rDNS record for your IP. This is particularly useful for email delivery and server identification.
Checking Your VPN IP
Use the tool above to verify that your VPNUK connection is working. When connected, your IP should show a VPNUK address. The rDNS field will show the hostname associated with your IP.
