PPTP is the simplest VPN protocol to configure on Windows 8 or 8.1. Note: PPTP is a legacy protocol — IKEv2 or OpenVPN is recommended for security.

Security warning: PPTP provides minimal security and should only be used where IKEv2 or OpenVPN are not possible. We recommend the VPNUK App or IKEv2 instead.

Before you begin

Find your VPN username, password and server address in the Members Area under VPNUK Account Details.

Open Control Panel

Press Windows key + X and select Control Panel.

Network and Sharing Centre

Click Network and Internet → Network and Sharing Centre.

Set up a new connection

Click Set up a new connection or network → Connect to a workplace → Use my Internet connection (VPN).

Enter server address

Enter your VPNUK server address in the Internet address field. Name it VPNUK PPTP. Click Create.

Set VPN type to PPTP

Go to Change adapter settings, right-click the VPNUK connection → Properties → Security. Set Type of VPN to Point to Point Tunnelling Protocol (PPTP). Click OK.

Connect

Right-click the connection → Connect / Disconnect. Click Connect next to VPNUK PPTP. Enter your VPN username and password.
