Note: The IKEv2 setup on Windows 8 follows the same steps as Windows 10 — install the VPNUK certificate via MMC, then add a VPN connection through the Control Panel. See the full detailed guide with screenshots here (the steps are identical).

Part 1 — Install the VPNUK Certificate

IKEv2 requires the VPNUK root certificate to be installed in Windows. Download the certificate and install it using the Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

  1. Download the VPNUK root certificate (vpnuk.crt)
  2. Press Windows + R, type mmc and press Enter
  3. In MMC: File → Add/Remove Snap-in → Certificates → Add → Computer account → Local Computer → OK
  4. Expand Certificates (Local Computer) → Trusted Root Certification Authorities
  5. Right-click CertificatesAll Tasks → Import
  6. Browse to the downloaded vpnuk.crt file and import it
  7. Ensure it is placed in Trusted Root Certification Authorities and click Finish

Part 2 — Add the VPN Connection

  1. Open Control Panel → Network and Internet → Network and Sharing Centre
  2. Click Set up a new connection or network
  3. Select Connect to a workplace → Use my Internet connection (VPN)
  4. Enter your VPNUK server address (from Client CP or Welcome email). Name it VPNUK IKEv2. Click Create
  5. Go to Change adapter settings, right-click the VPNUK connection → Properties → Security
  6. Set Type of VPN to IKEv2
  7. Set AuthenticationUse Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP)Microsoft: Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
  8. Click OK. Right-click the connection → Connect. Enter your VPN username and password

Connected! Your internet traffic is now encrypted and routed through VPNUK.

Troubleshooting

Connection fails — certificate error

Ensure the VPNUK certificate was imported into Trusted Root Certification Authorities for Local Computer (not Current User). Open MMC to verify.
