Tip: The VPNUK Software v1.2.2 includes OpenVPN built-in — no config files to manage. The standalone guide below is for users who need OpenVPN independently (e.g. for obfuscated connections or custom configurations).

Step 1 — Download the OpenVPN client

Download the latest OpenVPN installer for Windows from the official OpenVPN website. We recommend OpenVPN v2.6.6 which is fully compatible with all VPNUK servers and obfuscated connections.

Download OpenVPN from openvpn.net

Step 2 — Install OpenVPN

Run the downloaded installer. Accept all default settings. When asked, allow the TAP adapter to be installed — this is required for OpenVPN to work. Once installed, the OpenVPN GUI icon will appear in your system tray.

Step 3 — Generate your VPNUK OpenVPN config file

Log in to the Members Area and use the OpenVPN Config Generator to create a .ovpn config file for your chosen server.

What to select in the config generator:

  • Protocol: UDP (recommended) or TCP
  • Port: 1194 (UDP) or 443 (TCP)
  • Server: Any UK server (shared IP) or your dedicated server
  • Obfuscation: Enable if you are on a restricted network

Step 4 — Import the config file into OpenVPN

There are two ways to import your config file:

Method A — Drag and drop

Right-click the OpenVPN GUI icon in the system tray, select Import file… and browse to your downloaded .ovpn file.

Method B — Copy to config folder

Copy the .ovpn file to C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config\ (or C:\Users\YourName\OpenVPN\config\ on newer installs). Restart the OpenVPN GUI.

Step 5 — Connect

Right-click the OpenVPN GUI icon in the system tray and select Connect next to your VPNUK profile. You will be prompted for your VPN username and password.

Credentials reminder: Use your VPN username and password from the Members Area under VPNUK Account Details — these are different from your website login.

Once connected, the OpenVPN system tray icon will turn green. Your internet traffic is now encrypted and routed through VPNUK.

Troubleshooting

Connection fails immediately

  • Check your VPN username and password in the Members Area under VPNUK Account Details.
  • Try switching from UDP to TCP in your config generator and re-importing the config.
  • Try a different server from the Client CP.

TAP adapter not found

Re-run the OpenVPN installer and ensure the TAP Windows Adapter component is selected. You may also need to run the installer as Administrator.
